“The Cheap Seats: Notebook” NFL GameDay Blog: October 12, 2008 – East Rutherford, NJ
› 3:58 pm: That does it, folks. The Jets emerge with the 26-14 victory over the Bengals today. Jones’ three touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 receiving) provided most of the offense. They are now 3-2 on the season.
› 3:56 pm: Cincinnati is driving with about 30 seconds left on the game clock. Their first pass attempt was a lob into the end zone, which was almost brought down.
› 3:48 pm: Two-minute warning. The stadium is emptying out — good for me to get home in decent time. I’ll head down to the locker room after the game to get some quotes. Look for them tomorrow.
› 3:40 pm: Jones scored from one yard out with 2:22 left on the clock, his third touchdown on the afternoon. His run, right up the middle, gives them a eight point lead. On the play prior, Favre had an opportunity for his second touchdown pass on the afternoon, but tight end Chris Baker couldn’t get it in on a nice catch on third down. The Jets failed to convert the two-point conversion.
› 3:26 pm: Jets tackle Kris Jenkins is being looked at after trainers came on the field to help him off.
› 3:21 pm: Favre just threw his second interception of the day. This pass was intended for Cotchery and intercepted by Corey Lynch. A few times today it looks like Favre has just tossed the ball up without reading the defenders. Bengals ball on their own 8 yard line.
› 3:18 pm: The Jets are 4-for-10 on third down today. Favre just hit receiver Jerricho Cotchery, who made a nice extended catch on the play, for the first down. New York is driving inside their 20.
› 2:59 pm: Feely’s 45-yard field goal gives the Jets the 20-14 lead. Feely, who played in this stadium for the Giants, doesn’t have to contend with any of the elements today. The weather is absolutely perfect: 70′s and very little wind.
› 2:57 pm: Nice punt return by Leon Washington for 22 yards to get it to their own 25. Points look like they’re coming, should they hang on to the ball.
› 2:52 pm: Marvin White just picked off Favre on the Jets’ own 3 yard line. The team was putting together a nice drive before the interception. I don’t really know why Favre threw that ball; he got out of pressure and just lobbed it up for tight end Bubba Franks, who had White in front of him the entire way.
› 2:50 pm: Half time is complete and my stomach is now full of chicken fingers. Just thought you’d like to know.
› 2:25 pm: The officials ruled that the Bengals did score with 8 seconds left in the half. 17-14, Jets.
› 2:22 pm: The officials are reviewing the last play to see if the Bengals scored on a one-yard QB sneak by Fitzpatrick. It appears he did, especially from the players’ reactions. Bengals jumped up and down, while the Jets just stood by idly.
› 2:11 pm: Chad “Ocho Cinco” Johnson just caught his first pass of the game with 2:57 left in the half. He grabbed another one about two minutes later. Johnson, who does not have “Cinco” on his uniform, was booed when announced by his new name. Fitzpatrick is having a hard time getting the ball downfield and I’m sure Johnson is frustrated Palmer is not in there today.
› 1:57 pm: Thomas Jones took the handoff and ran it in 7 yards out for the score. Jets up 17-7.
› 1:55 pm: Jets get the ball back when Fitzpatrick was sacked and fumbled. The Jets have the ball on their opponent’s 24 yard line.
› 1:50 pm: The Jets’ Jay Feely just hit a field goal to give them the 10-7 lead. They would have been up 14-7 had Laveranues Coles caught Favre’s pass in the end zone. He had the ball in his hands, but it came out just as he was falling down with a defender on him.
› 1:22 pm: Favre just hit a wide open Thomas Jones for the score. 7-7.
› 1:18 pm: The Jets just put the ball into the end zone — twice. Both touchdowns were called back on penalties; the first an ineligible receiver down field and the other offensive pass interference. Jets still with the ball.
› 1:14 pm: Favre just completed a short pass for first down on 4th and 1.
› 1:07 pm: The Bengals got on the scoreboard first with some defensive points. Jets quarterback Brett Favre lost control of the ball when he was sacked by Antwan Odom. The ball was then picked up by Chinedum Ndukwe, who ran it 15 yards for the score. Cincy 7, Jets 0.
› 12:57 pm: The Jets got the game going with a bang: Cheerleaders and fireworks. I’ve covered numerous Giants games here over the years and they’ve never had either.
› 12:00 pm: It’s about an hour from kickoff here at Giants Stadium and the Bengals just announced that quarterback Carson Palmer (sore elbow) is out for the game. Ryan Fitzpatrick will start in his place.
› 11:53 am: The New York Jets are without safety Eric Smith for today’s game. He was suspended for the hit he had on Arizona Cardinals receiver Anquan Boldin last week. Smith appealed the one-game ban, but the NFL said Smith’s helmet-to-helmet tackle, which knocked Boldin out indefinitely, was a violation of player safety rules.
